Last week we wrapped up our genre study of memoir. Most students were able to complete the assignment on time. I've seen a lot of good work so far - lots of details (in the form of dialogue, character actions and thoughts, and setting descriptions). I've really enjoyed reading about the meaningful events and relationships in the lives of my students. I feel like I've gained insight into what makes them tick.
This coming week we'll be embarking on a genre study of short stories. This unit of study will take us up to the Thanksgiving break. Since memoir and short stories share so many elements, it will be great to see students using the techniques we discussed during the memoir study again.
I'm also hoping to expand our understanding of audience, purpose, and genre. During the memoir study, every student wrote a traditional, text-only piece; for this unit, I'm hoping to see a wider range of styles. Picture books and graphic stories will hopefully join our all-text pieces in our Fall writing celebration.
